Remember Awe?
Remember awe? Was it that magnificent view of a snow-capped mountain range? Perhaps you've felt a sense of awe while holding a newborn baby. How about that time when an unexpected event took place that mightily impacted your life’s trajectory? Or you could be a “thinker” experiencing an epiphany.
Awe moments get our attention. In the spark of awe, we can feel magnificent, insignificant, blessed, proud, humble, confident, and unsure, all at the same time. When I have these moments, I think I know how Adam and Eve felt in the garden walking with God in the cool of the day.
Our capacity to experience awe is no accident. Humans are designed to experience awe occasionally. Maybe even all the time. Trees and horses do not have these moments.
When I stop to consider the reality of my existence and all that is around me, I feel it all so big, so small, so complicated, and so simple. This is awe.
The bible instructs us to be in awe of God. Psalm 33:8 in the Amplified says, “Let all the earth fear and worship the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.” (Ps. 33:8 AMP)
How can we possibly not be in awe of God?
Easy, just ignore Him. Or mostly ignore Him. Keeping God out of mind, or slotted into that Sunday morning checkoff, that’s how. I fear that this is most of people, most of the time. I fear it is me too much of the time.
The world, with its worry, hurry, and false promises, pushes us to this place where the command to be in awe of God is far away from our present reality.
Jesus commands us to seek first His kingdom. A big part of that is to keep your belief, trust, honor, love, and respect for God in mind. Seeking is having this “mind of Christ” in mind, more and more.
In seeking His kingdom, we experience peace, contentment, and have an ear for the Holy Spirit’s guidance in dealing with the affairs of life. As Christians, we know this. We have experienced it. Can I get to the place where such a posture is continuous?
Build your life around the awe of God, and when you imagine your last day, you will see yourself smiling and satisfied with your choices, even though you know you have messed up now and then.
I pray that embracing the awe of God will be an irresistible push on your life’s rudder and that you will be caught up in His net of truth. And on the close of that last day, you will see God smiling too.
